WHY you should know swear words in Spanish and WHICH ones!

Hola amigos,

So today, I shall talk about swear words!

Swear words are rather considered as a taboo in this world for teaching or learning any language, may it be English or Spanish!

So why learn SWEAR words?

We all use them, whether you accept it or not, in your mind or verbally. According to the Harvard linguist, in addition to verbal abuse, swear words have a variety of other important uses, including to add emphasis, to convey emotion, to find relief from pain, and quite importantly, to connect people in a relaxed social atmosphere.

As we’ll talk more about below, to use swear words in a spoken language demands a high degree of understanding, cultural sensitivity, and caution. But there’s no better time to start learning than right now.

Furthermore, you might even come across situations when you're out on a trip where you could easily be harassed by somebody if you wouldn't know what they would be talking about. Such situations should certainly call for some response!

So let's begin!

1. Hijo de puta

Meaning: Son of a b*tch

The word ‘hijo’ means son, and ‘puta’ means b*itch. It’s obviously a common swear word we use in English, and like our language, commonly used to express one’s frustration.

If you watch Narcos, you surely relate, mate!!

2. Qué Cabrón!

Meaning: You Bastard!

The literal translation is "A goat.". People rarely use it, but it's rather used as a sarcastic remark mentioned to a close friend.

3. Mierda

Meaning: Shit or crap

The most common Spanish swear word! . It literally translates to ‘shit’ or ‘crap’.

However, like English, people use it to express their anger just like we do.

4. Los Cojones

Meaning: The two amigos (Down there)
It’s not used regularly how you may think it’s used. In everyday conversations, most people refer to ‘Los Cojones’ for calling one’s bluff, such as ‘bullshit!’
You can use it to say ‘Tienes cojones’ which means ‘You have balls’ for describing a bold or brave activity. Or describe your eye balls with the same word.

5. Joder ( Ho-dey-r)

Meaning: F*ck

Don’t be astonished, it may translate to the F-word, but it’s not as strong as you think. Teenagers and adults use it loosely to one another, and it’s well accepted in most Spanish cultures without offending one another. It would rather be like how we call it, "Screw you, man!"

6. Gilipollas (Gali - poyyas)

Meaning: Idiot or dumbass

A common Spanish phrase to use is ‘no seas gilipollas’ which means“don’t be an idiot.”
In other words, you could also say ‘jerk’, ‘brat’, etc.

7. Anda a Cagar

Meaning: Go to hell!

It basically means ‘get lost’ or ‘go away.’ Usually expressed in frustration or in an angry way.

That's all for now!
