How to write letters - Part 2 Greetings & Endings

Image
Greetings & Endings .   In letters, there are multiple ways in which you address the concerned person. It's either going to be a formal greeting or an informal one.  In English, it is common to begin both personal & business related letters with "Dear ___." In Spanish, however, there are more variations depending on how formal you’d want to be. In English, as we call it "dear" is querido or querida depending upon the gender of the person. Querido is used for a male & querida for a female; plural forms queridos and querida can also be used. In Spanish, it's a rule to follow the greeting with a colon rather than the comma which we use in English. · Querido Jeet: (Dear Jeet,) · Querida Aahana: (Dear Aahana,) · Queridos Jeet y Aahana (Dear Jeet and Aahana,)  *Note that in Spanish the masculine form, queridos , is used if the recipients include people of both sexes. But querido is too casual f...

So, today I'm going to talk about letter writing in Spanish since I got requests from a few friends for the same! A few things you need to know before you start writing letters in Spanish: THE BIG 5 POINTS   1. Quality over quantity : If you feel you'll score well by writing a page full of content & vocabulary, you're going wrong somewhere. Mostly you'll be assigned a word limit but if you aren't , then do not waste time in adding more content. It's all about the quality of content you add into your essay. Let's say, even if you write 4-5 lines in the 2nd paragraph, it's surely more than enough. 2. Good grammar and adequate knowledge about tenses : Good grammar attracts and interests your examiner. If you haven't brushed through your tenses and their respective conjugations it will indeed get hard for you to write a quality essay. 3. Structuring : Whether you're writing an essay in English or Spanish, structuring qualifies...

Articles

Image
If speaking or writing fluently in a language is a tree, then Grammar forms the root to that tree. So without wasting more time on metaphors, I'm going to write about ARTICLES in this post! Why Articles? Articles are quite important in English as they provide certain information about the noun they precede.  There are two types of articles; Definite and Indefinite Articles 1. Definite Article (the) Used to indicate a noun that is definite or has been previously specified in the context: Please open the windows. I love the book you gave me. The pen, the pencil, the book 2. Indefinite Article (a, an) Used before singular nouns that are unspecified: A book An apple. So, this was what we learned in high school. In Spanish, it's completely a different concept. The articles change according to a particular gender that is assigned to that noun. All nouns are assigned a gender that is either masculine of feminine....

Basics - Pronunciations.

Image
“You can’t build a great building on a weak foundation. You must have a solid foundation if you’re going to have a strong superstructure” – Gordon B. Hinckley Even one of the best Spanish teachers and corporate trainers do not hesitate to take a look at their basics. Basics build your skills inside out. Whether you’d want to communicate with a Spanish professional or a tourist in your own country, write big essays or appear for oral examinations, you do need to hit the right source. You’ll find tons of pages on google that will show you the basics haphazardly without any prior knowledge. The most common “basics” you’ll see are the common phrases used in your day to day lives such as “como estas?”, “buenos dias”. No. Don’t ever start from there because if you don’t know how to pronounce it, trust me, it sounds terrible. So today’s blog will be dedicated to pronunciations in Spanish. Introduction.

I will be appearing for the DELE B1 Spanish exam in May, 2018. After 2 weeks of brainstorming, I found out that students were losing on crucial points in the last few sections of their papers that carry some heavy weightage. So when it comes to the essay...
